On this mountain, there are two forts, the old fort and the new one. The older one is not accessible anymore. Later this mountain was fortified and converted into a military station. This fort is more than 1000 years old and was built in a Dense forest and was left ignored for centuries. It was a well-known fort from the medieval periods when the local clans of the south and western parts were trying to conquer more territories to their empire.
In the 16th century, the Maratha empire was expanding under the rule of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Maharaj incorporated the fort into Swarajya in 1655 during the conquest of Jaoli. Shivaji Maharaj changed the name of the fort to “Vyaghragad” (Vyaghra – means tiger), because of its difficult natural defence. The Maratha clan Baji Rao Peshwa was successful in throwing out the Mughal invasion here. In 1706 the fort was taken over by Tai Telini. The following year Peshwa commander Bapu Ghokle fought a battle with Tai Telini, she fought for the fort for eight to ten months. In 1730 Vasota fort fell in the hand of Bapu Ghokle.
Later Around the year 1815, it was used as a prison and amongst other prisoners, there were two British officers, Hunter and Morrison. To liberate them Brig.Gen.Fitzgerald led the British forces in May 1818. They used elephants to make a route through the thick jungles and climbed the nearby old Vasota fort. From its better heights, they fired artillery destroying many buildings on Vasota. This fort was destroyed and looted by the Britishers. The value of the treasure Britishers looted was estimated to be approximately 5 Lakhs Rupiah. The current estimated value of the treasure as of January 2022 is Rs.7,11,81,08,26,851/- only.
After this destruction, the fort was deserted for centuries. Now it is developed as a tourist and trekking spot by the ministry of tourism, Maharashtra government.
